100th Day is Almost Here!

This is what I plan to do in my First Grade classroom on the 100th day of school. Read a book about the 100th day then have the children go on a hunt for 100 words around the room.  I asked the children to bring in 100 objects that can be glued down (e.g. Cheerios, goldfish, paper scraps...)  We will make an addition problem with these objects.  60+40=100.  The students will glue them down in groups of ten on a paper to make a model of the problem.   I hope to do the fruit loop necklaces where we put 100 on the necklace (in groups of 10 of course).   Draw and write about when the children are 100 years old. Make 100th day hats to wear. When they are at special area, I will hide 100 Hershey Kisses in the classroom for a Hershey Kiss hunt.  It is kind of like an Easter Egg hunt except each kiss is numbered and when they find one they have to put it on the 100 chart. We might do 100 stamps books. We will write our numbers 1-100.   I am co...

Mad Minute

Image
Some of you may have heard of the mad minute before...  I LOVE it!  The kids LOVE it!  It's a hit in my room. About ten years ago I was introduced to it when I was a second grade teacher.  Like most wonderful ideas, I learned it from a veteran teacher.  She had created a set of mad minutes and showed me how to organize them.  I am forever grateful! Flash forward ten years and I made my own typed set (different problems).  I kept the storage/organization the same but tweaked the procedure.  Basically it's a small bin with file folders cut in half to file the minutes behind it.  They are labeled +1s, -1s, +2s, -2s, etc.  (I will have to upload a picture soon.) What is a mad minute?  Well, it is a crazy minute where the kids try to solve twenty addition or subtraction problems. From the Scholastic bonus catalog, I ordered two sets of  Dry Erase pockets (6"x9")  to save paper.  It also helps with record ke...

Five For Friday (March 8th)

Image
I am so excited to link up with  Doodle Bugs Teaching  for another Five for Friday! A couple of my items are more personal and not school related this time. 1.  My baby girl WALKED!  I mean she took five steps carefully and didn't fall.  She is almost 11 months old.  I am so excited.  She has done this a few times this week.  It never ceases to amaze me how much she has learned in such a short time. 2.  In my quest to get healthy, I attempted jogging!  It felt good to do more than I thought I could.  Whenever I undertake something challenging, I try to look at it from a kid's perspective so I can be empathetic to their struggle at times. 3.  On a sad note, a friend's cancer came back full force.  She is in the hospital.  Please pray for peace and relief from the pain.  Life is a gift and circumstances can change quickly in either direction.  Times like these make me realize that life is unpredicta...

Sticker Books

Image
mycutegraphics.com I have always been a sticker fanatic so I guess I get to let out my inner child by passing out stickers.  As much as I love stickers, I do not love peeling them off of furniture or the floor.  Every year I make a simple sticker book that can fit in my students' pencil box. You can get two sticker book covers from one piece of 8x11 construction paper.  Cut it in half like a hamburger (wide) and fold it in half.  Write My Sticker Book on the cover.  Inside I take two pieces of copy paper cut in half and folded in half to make an eight page mini book.  More pages can be added or you can create another book when this one is full. When I give the children a sticker, I give them a choice: hand, shirt, or sticker book.  Early on I tell them that they can save their collection in the book.  It is wonderful to watch them keep track and count their stickers repeatedly throughout the year (one to one correlation).  T...

Venn Diagrams

Image
Sorting Rings  Venn Diagrams are a useful tool in just about every subject area.  This tool enables children to compare and contrast objects or concepts.  Graphic organizers help children visualize concepts.  I have a set of the sorting rings pictured above that I absolutely love.  I use them to teach whole group lessons as well as place them in a center for the children to apply what they learned.  I have children either sort objects or words/phrases written on index cards. Suggestions: Reading Compare/Contrast two characters Compare/Contrast two versions of the same story (e.g. The Gingerbread Man) Sort by number of syllables Sort by word endings Math Sort objects by color, size, shape Sort solids by roll, stack, slide Sort numbers by number of digits Sort addition and subtraction problems Science Compare/Contrast two animals (e.g. bird and bat) Compare/Contrast two habitats Compare/Contrast two seasons Social Studies Compare/C...
